Fellow students, dear readers,
We have reached the end of another eventful semester. I hope
you were able to keep up with the fast pace of the autumn
semester. For us on the VSETH board, it has been a pleasure
to work for our fellow students. Every day was full of new
challenges, where we got to learn a lot each day, all while
working on a wide spectrum of issues and projects for the
students.
Now that we are definitely in winter, to kick off the cold winter
days, we organised the Punschausschank on Polyterrasse on 15
November, where we offered punch and chestnuts to our guests.
On 19 November, ETH Day took place in the main building, where we
celebrated ETH’s 167th birthday. Among many prominent speakers and
awards, I also had the honour and opportunity to give a speech and award the Golden
Owls and the Credit Suisse Award for Best Teaching. The Golden Owl is given by VSETH to
one lecturer from each of the 16 departments of ETH for excellence in teaching. To choose
the winners, we sent out a survey last May in which the students could rate their lectures
of the past two semesters. With the results, the student associations chose the winners
of their respective departments. Once again, congratulations to all winners of the Golden
Owl this year and to this year’s recipient of the CS Award, Dr Ghislain Fourny from the
Department of Computer Science! You may find my speech and the recording of ETH Day
2022 on the ETH video portal (video.ethz.ch/campus/eth-day/2022.html) and the winners
are available on ethz.ch/en/the-eth-zurich/education/awards/golden-owl.html
A highlight of the last month was the Polyball, which took place for the first time in three
years. It is always spectacular to see how much effort goes into such an event, which offers
nine hours of non-stop music, dancing and much more. Many thanks to the organisers and
everyone who made it possible, I am already looking forward to the next one.
The final weeks of the semester are traditionally accompanied by lots of opportunities to
enjoy fondue, raclette and mulled wine at many events of the student associations. As
such, we have organised the traditional Nik’s Hütte on Hönggerberg: at the HCI piazza,
Nik’s Hütte welcomed its guests for three weeks straight for raclette and mulled wine,
every evening hosted by different organisations in VSETH.
As the holidays approach, I hope you can find your well-deserved break before moving on
with the upcoming exam session. I wish you wonderful holidays, a happy new year and
good luck with your exams in the upcoming session!
Best,
Emir
