Craft your own Pallet Sofa

The outdoor chill and chat season has started, so it is crucial to have a fancy and comfortable setup for your Apéros. The idea presented in this article is a cheap, ecological and fun way to build an outdoor 2-seater sofa. This seems wonderful and yes it is! However, building your first sofa is not that obvious, which increases your satisfaction once it’s done.

Read Time:2 Minute, 49 Second

đź•‘3h for your first one, then 2h

đź’˛~CHF 5.- if you have all the equipment and if you get secondhand pallets for free. Otherwise, 3 new pallets cost around CHF 90.-

👷‍♀️2 people: You will need a friend, neighbour, sister, brother, mother, father, or anybody for step 4

You will need:

  • 3 pallets which can be broken

  • 10 wood screws (at least 80mm long) and drilling bits
  • 1 wood saw (ideally jigsaw)
  • 1 electric screwdriver
  • stuff to tear pallets apart: 1 crowbar or 2 little hammers and some patience
  • If you have: one pallet jack
  • Equipment to work safely: gloves, glasses
  1. Cut all three pallets lengthwise to keep only four of the five planks (cut at the edge of the inner plank). You should

end up with three type A pieces.

  2. Take two of the three type A pieces and cut them along the width to get parts B to E

Attention: cut one on the right of the central bar, the other one on the left. You will understand at step 6 why this is important.

  1. Now the fun/tough part starts, depending on how patient you are: Take one of the leftover parts from step 1 and isolate both planks from the structure. You should end up with parts F and G.

Pro tip: You can use a pallet jack to save some nerves here. Put the large plank on the floor and the wheels of the pallet jack on top of it. Then lift the forks and the upper part should come loose. You will have to use violence to get rid of the last joint, though.

Beginner Tip: If a plank gets broken in this process, that’s fine since the two other leftover parts will not be used and you can start over with those.

Novice tip: You can avoid this step if you have two other wood planks which are about 1.2 metre long.

  1. Congratulations! You have all the necessary parts to assemble your sofa. Pieces B and C are the feet and the thin part should be on the ground (yes, trust me it’s going to be stable enough). Place part A in between parts B and C to build the sitting area. The part that still has two planks comes at the front and should be screwed with parts B and C

Intermediate Tip: Drill before screwing to avoid the wood to crack.

  1. Screw part F on the top back of the sofa. It will then hold the backrest (part D andE)

Attention: Part F is the thinnest between F and G, this is actually important

  1. Place parts D and E vertically on part F to set the backrest. Screw them to the rest, for example in between the arm resting planks and at the back in the middle.
  2. To solidify the structure, screw part G at the bottom back of the sofa. The screw might have to be slightly oblique.
  3. Go get a drink from your fridge and enjoy your masterpiece. You can sort the tools back later.
  4. Send an Apéro picture to events@vseth.ethz.ch or even better a postcard to VSETH CAB E23 Universitätstrasse 6 8092 Zürich

All this might seem complicated with just written instructions, especially with my writing skills. Feel free to write to events@vseth.ethz.ch we will be happy to give you more advice.
