Last but not Least

Dear Readers,

It’s been an eventful period since our last issue of Polykum! Let me share some highlights of what we’ve been up to at VSETH.

In early April, we had the privilege of hosting the IDEALiSTiC conference, a pivotal meeting for the student councils of the universities in the IDEA League – a strategic alliance among TU Delft, RWTH Aachen, Chalmers University of Technology, Politecnico di Milano, and ETH Zurich. Over two days, five representatives from each university engaged in workshops addressing common challenges – such as student engagement and student well-being – while also getting to know ETH Zurich.

A few weeks later, a delegation from VSETH travelled to Bern for the Delegates Assembly of the Union of Students in Switzerland (VSS), to which we belong. There we elected a new board and decided on reworking the bylaws. Otherwise, we had the chance of meeting Eric Nussbaumer the current president of the national parliament, as well as Adolf Ogi, former president of Switzerland.

Following the assembly, we launched the first ever VSETH Weekend – together with 40 VSETH Members we spent the weekend in Einsiedeln. There we held a bunch of workshops on topics like “gratitude towards Actives”, “VSETH Next Influencer”, “What even is IA” and more! In Between the workshops and in the evening there was also more than enough time to go on walks, play games and to get to know the other participants. Don’t worry if you didn’t join us this time around. There will be another VSETH Weekend next Spring Semester and there will be the Projekti Weekend and University Politics Weekend next Semester. I hope to see you there!

Currently, we are formulating our response to the PAKETH Consultation. A quick refresher: PAKETH is a proposed reform of the academic calendar at ETH, designed to create more flexibility during the summer for personal projects, internships, or simply a well-deserved break. As VSETH, we have been deeply involved in shaping this project, ensuring that student perspectives are considered at every turn. While we are enthusiastic about the potential changes, there remain a few areas of concern that we are addressing. If you have not heard of it yet, go check out this article to read more about it.

We are also preparing for the upcoming elections in June. These elections will determine, among other things, the board members for the next semester and the representatives for various ETH committees. We’re actively looking for enthusiastic people to join the VSETH Board. Serving on the Board has been an immensely rewarding experience and I highly recommend that you consider it. If you have any questions or are interested in exploring board positions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at vseth@vseth.ethz.ch. We’d love to hear from you!

As this is the third and final issue of Polykum for FS24, and with my term concluding before the next publication, I take this opportunity to write to you one last time. Serving as the president of VSETH has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Thank you for your trust and support over the past year. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours and good luck for the upcoming exams!

Love,

Julia
